Former Deputy President of South Africa Dies at 64

South Africa is mourning the loss of David Dabede Mabuza. He was one of its most influential yet enigmatic political figures. He passed away on 3 July 2025 at the age of 64. The former Deputy President was affectionately known as “The Cat” in political circles for his elusive and calculating style. He leaves behind a complex legacy of loyalty. His legacy also includes power brokering and regional dominance.

From the Grassroots to the Union Buildings

Mabuza was born in the small village of Phola, Mpumalanga. He started his career as a teacher. He quickly rose through political ranks during the turbulent transition years of the 1990s. He played an instrumental role in education unions. Later, he became Premier of Mpumalanga (2009–2018). He cemented his reputation as a powerful ANC figure in the province.

A Kingmaker on the National Stage

Mabuza’s national breakthrough came at the ANC’s 54th National Conference in 2017. He emerged as a kingmaker by backing Cyril Ramaphosa for ANC President. This was despite early expectations that he would align with the Zuma faction. His support was pivotal in swinging the conference outcome. This ultimately led to him becoming the Deputy President of both the ANC and the Republic of South Africa.

The Master of Quiet Influence

Unlike many politicians drawn to the spotlight, Mabuza operated behind the scenes. His calm demeanor and political maneuvering earned him both admiration and suspicion. Critics often pointed to allegations of corruption and patronage in Mpumalanga. His supporters hailed him as a strategic thinker. They saw him as a unified during a volatile period in ANC politics.

A Man of Paradoxes

David Mabuza remained a mystery to many, retreating from public view after stepping down in 2023. His silence was as political as his speeches. In his farewell message to Parliament, he spoke of needing time “to rest and ponder.” This left political analysts speculating about his future. His death brought final closure to that chapter.

Tributes and Reflections

After the announcement of his passing, messages of condolences poured in from across the political spectrum. ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula described him as a “devoted leader.” He was also a freedom fighter who dedicated his life to the service of the people. Many remembered his ability to broker peace in volatile ANC structures. His deep roots in provincial structures also shaped his worldview.

️ A Man of Mystery, A Man of Service

David Mabuza was never easy to define—part strategist, part statesman, always in control of his own narrative. He is remembered as a loyal cadre. Alternatively, he is seen as a political tactician. One thing is certain: his influence on post-apartheid South Africa will not be forgotten.

“He knew when to step ahead and when to step back. That’s what made him powerful.”

“In politics, survival is not always about being loud. Sometimes, the most powerful man is the one you don’t see coming.”
— Commentator on Mabuza’s rise, 2017
