As young as she is, Lindelwa Mpaka, born on April 5, 1996, in Mdantsane, NU1, has made a significant impact with her academic achievements. Let’s set aside her beauty and style for a moment and focus on her remarkable recognition as the youngest PhD graduate at the University of Fort Hare (UFH) during the 2024 spring graduation. Not only has she achieved this milestone, but she also became a homeowner in 2020.
Dr. Mpaka began her academic journey at UFH in 2013, starting her studies at just 16 years old. She completed her bachelor’s degree in chemistry and microbiology in record time and continued to excel academically, earning cum laude in both her Honours and Master’s degrees.
Embarking on her PhD journey in 2019, her groundbreaking research in microbiology has set new standards in environmental sustainability and waste management, earning her a Doctor of Philosophy in Microbiology.
Currently, Lindelwa works as a lab technician at the University of Fort Hare in the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology. With her wealth of knowledge, she is committed to sharing her expertise by assisting young people with their applications and delivering motivational talks. “I am planning to go to more high schools with some friends outside science,” she said.

“I think young people growing up in a compromised economy and a country with GBV activities higher than the opportunities, we should not focus on what is really happening, but look towards changing our future and that of our offspring.”
